  • Home

    Welcome at Keane's!

Michael Keane When you step into Keane's, while the facilities are modern and comfortable, the atmosphere is one of stepping back in time. Situated 3 kms from Kilkee on the main Kilrush-Kilkee road (N67), it has grown from shop to pub, to restaurant, to function facilities and accommodation, all the while catering for local, national and international alike.

The site of the bar has been occupied by the Keane family since 1641 and today it is owned and managed by Michael + Bridie, assisted by daughters Aisling + Lorraine. It is very much a hands on business with Bridie in the background baking bread and making desserts, supervising the pub and responsible for accommodation, while Aisling + Lorraine manage the restaurant. The Keane family and staff strive to make your visit an enjoyable and memorable one.

What more to do in West Clare

Birdwatching on Loop Head Peninsula

Birdwatching
The area is very popular with birdwatchers from Ireland, Britain and Continental Europe. This popularity is due to the range of seabirds that breed here each summer (including Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins and Gannets), and in particular due to the autumn passage of an amazing array of seabirds and waders. The best months are August through October, when West and NW winds blow many of the passing seabirds close to shore, so allowing excellent viewing. Seabirds regularly seen here in good numbers include Manx and Sooty Shearwaters, Storm and Leaches Petrels, and Great, Pomarine and Arctic Skuas. Sightings of Little Stints, Curlew and the American Buff-breasted Sandpiper have been made, and there are many other rare species seen from time to time from local viewing points.
Loop Head
Dolphin Watching
Dolphinwatch in Carrigaholt is offering 2-hour dolphin watching boat trips to observe wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat and as well as nature boat trips to observe the diverse wildlife.

Fishing
The unpolluted, rugged coastline has an abundance of varied fish species, including pollack, mackarel, triggerfish and many other species of Atlantic Rockfish. Angling is possible from the piers at Querrin or Carrigaholt Village as well as at various other spots on the Shannon Estuary. Shannon Estuary charters are available in Kilkee.

Swimming, Diving & Snorkeling
Diving equipment, oxygen refills and skippered boat hire are available in nearby Kilkee, enabling the enthusiast to enjoy numerous dives in the estuary and off the rugged Atlantic Coastline. Safe Swimming is possible on our lovely little beach, 5 mins. away, as well as in Kilkee.
Cycling the Loop Head Cycleway
Sightseeing
A drive with car or bicycle along the amazing coastal scenery between Kilkee and Loop Head Lighthouse is a must. The Loop Head cycleway passes near the cottage, bicycles can be rented in Kilkee. The famous Cliffs of Moher are only 40 mins away; a little bit further to the North is Doolin (where boats are leaving to the Aran Islands) and the unique limestone area of the Burren, a heaven for walkers, climbers and botanists. We also recommend strolling through the town of Ennis with its medieval atmosphere, while Bunratty and Knappogue Castles are only a little further apart. Medieval dinners are arranged there throughout the year.

Boat Trips
Frequent boat trips from Carrigaholt and Kilrush visiting the breeding grounds of the bottleneck Dolphin also boat trips from Kilrush to the Monastic ruins at Scattery Island

Other attractions
Visit Vandeleur Walled Gardens in Kilrush, The Little Ark at Moneen, West Clare Railway, pamper yourself with a Seaweed Bath or one of the many other treatments available at Kilkee Thalassotherapy Centre.
